2. Read the questions in Phase 2. Why do you think there are back–up questions?

The back–up questions are there to help the student if they don't understand or can't answer the main question.

The examiner uses these questions to give the student another chance to answer. They do not give extra marks, but they help keep the conversation going if a student is unsure.
