Nearly all state schools have to follow the national curriculum. Generally, state schools are divided into: community schools that are run by the local authorities and cannot be lead by business or religious groups. Then, foundation schools and voluntary schools are also sponsored by a state, but they have more freedom to change the way they do things compared with community schools. The next type is an academy. It is run by a special body that is independent from the local council. An academy can follow a different curriculum. Grammar schools, the last type, choose their pupils on the basis of academic skills or abilities and there is often an exam to get in. This examination is taken by children at the age of 11, in the last year of primary school, and it is known as the eleven plus. School entrance exams may include the following aspects: numerical reasoning, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, English comprehension, punctuation and grammar, and creative writing.
