UNIT 9. Across State Systems » Стр.95 (1)
1. Read and guess the meanings of the words in bold. In the United Kingdom (the UK), elections (вибори) are held (проводяться) about every five years. The UK is divided into 646 political areas, called constituencies and in each constituency (виборчій округ) people vote for (голосують) one person representing (який представляє) the political party (політичну партію) they want to see in power (при владі). The politician (політик) with the most votes becomes the Member of Parliament (член парламенту) (known as an MP) for that area. Parliament, therefore, consists of (складається з) 646 MPs, and the party with the majority (більшість) of MPs forms the government (уряд). The leader of that party becomes the prime minister (прем’єр міністер). b) Match the words with their definition. 1. election 2. hold sth 3. constituency 4. vote for sb/sth 5.represent sb/sth 6. political party 7. in power 8. parliament 9. consist of sth 10. majority 11. government 12. prime minister (or PM) 13. politician 3. one of the areas into which the country is divided for voting in political elections. 11. the group of people elected to make the laws in a country. 1. the time when people choose individuals to speak for them and act for them. 4. choose sb/sth in an election. 9. be formed or made up of sth. 8. a group of people in control of a country. 6. a group of people with the same ideas who want to win an election. 13. a person with a job in politics. 2. to organize an event such as an election 10. the largest number or part of sth.; opposite to minority. 5. to act officially for people or an organization. 12. the leader of the government in some countries. 7. in political control of the country.
