Hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and volcanic eruptions are all natural hazards. So are tornadoes, droughts and avalanches. The natural hazards most feared by the people of Central America are earthquakes. In 1972 an earthquake hit Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Irkilled nearly 10,000 people, injured 20,000 more and destroyed 50,000 houses. In Costa Rica the volcano Irazu erupted in 1963, destroying farms and spreading ash over San Jose, the capital. In Guatemala the volcano Fuego erupted in 1974. It destroyed many coffee farms and caused other damage. No part of the world is totally free from natural hazards.
