Taras Shevchenko was a famous Ukrainian poet, writer and artist. He was born in 1814 in the village of Moryntsi in the Kyiv region. His parents were serfs, so his childhood was very hard. Shevchenko loved drawing and reading, and later he studied art at the St Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1840 his first book of poems called 'Kobzar' was published. In his poems he wrote about the history of Ukraine and the life of simple people. Because of his patriotic ideas, the tsarist government arrested him and sent him as a soldier to distant Kazakhstan. After ten years of exile he returned, but his health was very poor. Taras Shevchenko died in 1861, but his poems and paintings are still very popular. Every year Ukrainians celebrate Shevchenko's days and read his works at schools and universities.
