Lesson 2. Nature and the Environment » 18

Стор.69 18. Write an article for your school magazine entitled «How can we make our town a better place to live in?». Imagine that the town/city you live in faces serious problems. The streets are dirty, there are too many cars, the air and nearby river are polluted, the trees are cut down for more space, etc. Suggest ways to improve tho situation, explaining the results of each suggestion (e.g. the government should force factories to put filters on chimneys — harmful gases won't be able to pollute the atmosphere). Use the plan below. The living conditions in our town are getting worse and worse. The main problems are caused by air and water pollutions and rubbish. The toxic fumes from cars and factories have a bad impact on our health, as well as bad quality of water. And the problem of rubbish which is everywhere is the mirror of our culture. So what can we do to improve the environmental situation in our town? First of all–there should be installed more litter bins on the streets and parks. The government must strictly fine people who drop the litter everywhere. I’m sure there will be less rubbish on the streets. The government should foece factories to make special roughing tanks for the waste water and people should always teach the next generations that water is our life and we must save it. Concerning the air pollution, which depends on the quantity of cars and factories in our town, we should also think how to stop it. If the public transport is improved and developed there will be less cars in our town. There should also be bicycle tracks and all the cars should be changed into modern electric cars. In such a way the harmful gases won’t be able to pollute the atmosphere.
