B. Choose a, b, c or d.

An environmental organisation called Eco-world is running a competition for schools in Ireland to raise environmental awareness. The school which proves to be the most environmentally aware will win €2000.

Entries so far have included a project showing how difficult it is to breathe the air in many cities because of all the pollution in the (1) b. atmosphere. Another school has created an experiment which shows how (2) d. smoke and fog combine to make smog. There are also recommendations on how to deal with all the (3) c. litter people leave lying around in the streets. Some schools are choosing specific problems and are even getting active. For example, a school in the rural Mountbatton area is insisting that a factory nearby should be closed (4) d. down because of the amount of poisonous chemicals that are being (5) a. pumped into a nearby lake.

It’s encouraging to see young students getting involved and helping to protect the environment.
