The Stoa of Attalos, which is in the Ancient Agora in Athens, Greece, was one of the oldest shopping centres. It was built by and named after King Attalos II of Pergamos around 150 BC. The Stoa (1) ended up becoming the most important building in the Agora and was used for centuries. It was a large building, 116 metres long, and had a simple floor (2) plan: there were two floors with rows of rooms that were used as shops, and large open (3) sections for shoppers to wander around. It had 42 shops in all.

The Stoa became a place where merchants sold their products. They (4) displayed their goods and the Athenians gathered not only to shop but also to (5) hang around and meet with other people.
