St. Sophia’s Cathedral

St. Sophia’s Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in Kyiv. It was built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise. The cathedral is famous for its beautiful mosaics and frescoes from the 11th century. Inside you can also see the place where Yaroslav the Wise was buried. For a long time St. Sophia’s Cathedral was the main church of Kyivan Rus. Today it is a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many tourists come here to learn about the history and culture of Ukraine.

Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was founded in 1051 by the monk Anthony in caves on the hills above the Dnipro River. Later many churches, monasteries and towers were built around the caves. One of the most famous buildings is the Great Bell Tower. Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Pilgrims and tourists come here to pray, see the holy relics and walk through the underground caves. From the territory of the Lavra you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Dnipro and the left bank of Kyiv.
