For me the strongest argument is that literary works develop analytical abilities which are fundamental life skills. When we read and have to notice details, question the text and weigh evidence, we train our brain for real life situations. The next important reason is that stories teach us to think about actions and consequences, so we can make better choices. I also like the arguments that literature helps us understand other people and visit different cultures in our imagination. The last arguments for me are that literature is fun and inspires us, because they are pleasant, but not as important as life skills.
