Description of the pictures

Picture 1

The first picture shows an elderly couple and a little girl. They are sitting on a green sofa in a cosy living room. The grandparents are holding the girl and smiling. The girl is sitting between them and feels safe and loved.

Picture 2

The second picture shows a nuclear family: a mother, a father, a daughter and a son. They are in a bright modern living room. The parents are sitting on the sofa and the children are next to them. All of them look happy and friendly.

a) Advantages and disadvantages of each type of family

Family with grandparents (Picture 1)

Advantages:

– The child gets a lot of love and attention.

– Grandparents usually have more time to talk, read and play with the child.

– They can teach family traditions and tell interesting stories about the past.

Disadvantages:

– Grandparents may be tired or have health problems and cannot do many active things.

– There is a big generation gap, so they may be strict or old‑fashioned.

– Sometimes the child misses his or her parents very much.

Family with parents and children (Picture 2)

Advantages:

– Children live together with their parents and feel protected.

– Parents are usually younger and more active; they can do sports, travel and go out with their children.

– Both parents can work and give the family everything they need.

Disadvantages:

– Parents are often busy at work and may not spend enough time with their children.

– Children may quarrel with their parents or with each other.

– Grandparents may live far away and the children do not see them very often.

b) Problems the children in each type of family might have

In the first family the child may feel lonely without mother and father and worry about her grandparents’ health. She may have to help them with housework and sometimes she may not understand their strict rules.

In the second family the children may stay at home alone when their parents are at work. They may spend too much time on the Internet or watching TV. They can also feel jealous if parents pay more attention to one child than to the other.

c) How each family compares to my own

My family is more like the second picture. I live with my parents and my sibling. My mum and dad work hard, but we try to have meals together and talk every day. My grandparents do not live with us, but they live not far from our house, so we visit them almost every weekend. In this way I can enjoy a close family with my parents and also have warm relations with my grandparents, like in the first picture.
