When I first came into my new classroom in the village school, the students were sitting in rows. My previous job (1) had been in a modern school in the capital city, where the students (2) had always sat in a circle. I asked the students to stand up and move their desks. After we (3) had arranged the desks in a circle, I asked them to sit down and began the lesson.

After we (4) had tried the new arrangement for several days, I asked the students what they thought about it. Here’s what they said: ‘We were surprised because we (5) hadn’t sat in a circle before. We (6) had always sat in rows and the lessons (7) had often seemed boring. Now we have more discussions and everyone joins in.’

Luckily the head teacher agreed with them!

‘I (8) hadn’t realised that moving the furniture could make such a difference,’ he said.
